way to examine hypothesis for my study

Dear Committee

I'm thinking how to examine hypothesis(local residents are stereotyped, females are stereotyped in Chosun Ilbo) and it could be investigated IF video works in the newspaper are included.

1

This are some difficulties I have faced while I proceed to photograph.

First of all, people I'm working with do not know why I photograph them so many times.
For instance, after time passed by, Kim asked me again why I photograph her many times even though I explained my intention well.
Kim all of sudden doesn't like me to photograph her now even though she cooperated with me at first, which actually made me shocked because no one have allowed me to photograph them at first.

Second, Kwak is very reluctant to inviting me their home. It seems that he is very worried about opening his privacy. It might provide me with a limited place I could show.

Finally, I have some concerns.
Both of them have very few activities, most of them are repeated.

Note, I'm kind of excited to meet the family I met the other day.

Dear Committee,

As I asked to David, I'm wondering if it's enough to ask questions to an editor and photographers to examine hypothesis I brought for my research compoent.
Due to the scarcity of multimedia of portraying poverty in Chosun Ilbo, I think it's very difficult to examine the hypothesis through multimedia appearing in that newspaper.

Or,
Since there are some video works there, the hypothesis could be investigated if the video are included.

Dear Committee,
I'm supposed to photograph 3 different families for my professional project.
I'm currently doing two.
I met third family with five kids yesterday. I allowed me to photograph them.

so, now I have
1. male - he seems he someday stops me to photograph him. He didn't seem to understand why I try to photograph hime MANY TIMES

2. female - even though I fully explained my project before, someone who knows her called yesterday and he said she didn't want me to photograhe her. I'll meet her later to see what's going on.

3. family - I just met this family.

1

Dear Committee,
I was told that a photo editor of Chosun Ilbo will be able to answer possible questions I will bring.
Before that, I need to select which ones will go after I talk to you.
I'm glad if you let me know what you think.
thanks,

Hi, David
I think I need to narrow down the definition of multimedia in asking questions to Korean photographers and editors because my professional project would combine photographs and audio. Therefore, the definition of multimedia HERE would be those made from both photographs and audio. Almost all of multimedia Chosun Ilbo has produced are video pieces.
what do you think?

and, I'm wondering how I can examine hypothesis I have formed with 'case study' I will conduct because my research compoent investigating multimedia in Chosun Ilbo doesn't seem to say about both 'local residents' and ' female'.
('local residents' means here people living not in Seoul, where most of the main industries and institutions have been centralized.)
Do I, maybe, ask how 'local residents' and 'female' have been portraited in Korean multimedia to the Chosun Ilbo's photographers?

Please check my blog to see some progress.
http://joonproject.blogspot.com/
I'm still waiting for responses from both photographers and editors of Chosun Ilbo.

The following is the possible questions I could ask to photographers and editors.
If you have any I need to add up, let me know.

thank you,

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
After identifying multimedia in Chosun Ilbo, I realize almost all of them are based on 'events'. Is there any reason that they are all 'event-based'?

In the specific multimedia I found, music is on. What does the music mean in the multimedia?
- who decide to use it?
- how much importantly does audio work in multimedia when you create them?

why were some people's faces pixelated? Is there any reason to hide their idenity?

why did the word "서울역사내 야간 노숙 전면 금지" appear on the pictures?
(The korean word mean 'staying overnight inside of Seoul Station is banned')

There many similar picketing shots which would deliver a repeated message, at least for me. What does that mean?( did you edit it intentionally?)

why the multimedia is created in this time? (is it because crackdown to homeless just started?)

Is there any effort to create multimedia associated with news article?
for instance, news article about poverty could accompany multimedia work of poverty in Chousn Ilbo?

who shoot and edit multimedia?
- prior to shoot, do you decide that you use photographs for multimedia?
- IF you make multimedia by yourself, what's an important part you consider when you edit?(sequences, audio, interview, story. etc)
-----------------------------
For a photo editor,
How do you decide when multimedia is needed to be made?

In general, when it comes to create multimedia, what circumstances do your photo department have?
- Did you train your photographers for multimedia?
- How do your staff photographers think about multimedia? (do they like to make them?)
- Do you provide enough time producing multimedia to staff?
- Does your company encourage you to produce them?

How much responses do you obtain from readers if any?
- IF they don't have, why does it happen?
What are the most challenges you or staff photographers have for multimedia?
(BOTH in the interal reasons, for instance, hypothetically not enough motivation to produce multimedia in your company and, in the external resons, for instance, hypothetically Korean readers who have a not enough interest in multimedia)

IF there are both interal reasons and external reasons, what causes you think to lead?

IF any, is there any way or effort to boost to multimedia? and how?
(more long-term projects, etc)

What do you have in mind about producing multimedia overall in Korean media?
(what is your general opionion of producing multimedia in Korean media including other companies?)

Kim leaves from her house to go to church in Sunday morning. Going church is one of the activities she has.

She waits for her friends in front of the grocery.

She waits for 30 minutes here and other neighbors come and chat with each other

She is on the way to go to church. She just crosses the busy street.

She accompanys with her church members. She didn't allow me to photograph in the church.

His handcart is seen next to the recycling center located in the brand-new aprtment complex

After his work is done at 7am, he relaxs with a cup of coffee.

Depending on how much items he brings weigh, he gets paid from the owner of the center.

He earns $25 when he visits the center. He brings items twice a day.

He unloads items he just picks up in the morning.

He removes his handcart off the scale after the items are weighed.

Hi, David
Now, holiday was gone and it's time to get back to my project. haha.

I'll stick to the "event-based" multimedia in Chosun Ilbo because, like you said, it's what they have done.

and, at this point, I'm wondering if I use the only one multimedia containing 15 photographs or I need more for my research component.

The multimedia with photographs is the only one with pictures within the given period when I'm supposed to investigate multimedia.
They have a few video pieces portraying poverty, all of them are based 'events'.

and, this is my concern.
IF I use more multimedia, obviously a video piece, analyzing video would be different from examining photographs of multimedia.
It would be another world I need to learn because I believe there would be a different tool to examine the video.
what do you think?

I like the 'case study'. It would more make sense for my research component
I'll contact photographers and editor associated with creating the multimedia.

I'm looking forward to hearing from you

thanks,
Joon.

Hi,David
for a research component, I will identify multimedia portraying poverty in Chuson Ilbo, a very conservative but the most influential newspaper in Korea.

In each of multimedia, I will capture all pictures consisting of the multimedia.
Each of photograph, then, will be examined.

However, I'm wodering if this is what I'm supposed to do when photographs from multimedia are examined.

I believe that investigating multimedia in Korean newspaper is worthy for this research component because my professional project's final product would be a multimedia.

Any feedback will be highly appreciated before I proceed more.

Following photographs are from multimedia I posted earlier. I have captured all 15 photographs from it even though I just put three pictures here.
Each of them will be examined.

Click=> WATCH VIDEO

This multimedia was created when the city of Seoul, Korea started to crack down the homeless staying overnight in the Seoul Station.

According to Lacey(1998), a conventional meaning can be decoded by angel, distance, composition, lens type and lighting.

Angel-normal (meaning - neutal)

distance-medium shot (meaning - places audience at a 'safe'distacne, near enough to observe but not intrude

composition-conventional(sysmmetrical) (meaning - posed, calm composition)

lens type - telephoto (meaning - voyeuristic)

lighting -

Contiuously next 12 photographs from the multimedia will be examined.

Sampling 1

For sampling, news multimedia made with photographs will be identified from August of 2009 to August of 2011.

Following multimedia was made by Chusun ILbo in August 11, 2011.
The multimedia consists of 15 photographs.
I will examine each of photographs with "Textual analysis and Semiotics" and "Lacey's Image Analysis Model" as I has addressed in my proposal.

Click "WATCH VIDEO" and hit play button at the bottom left.
It will be played after a short commercial.
